SETTING UP OF BAMBOO CHIPPING CLUSTERS: With the bamboo stock estimated as high as 25.26 million MT in the State of Mizoram and in absence of reasonable bamboo based industries in the State , most of the harvested bamboos are sent out in natural form to the Paper Mill situated at Panchgram, Assam. In an attempt to infuse value-addition in the process, bamboo chipping within the State has been considered viable, simultaneously generating employment in the process.
Non – conventional machines were therefore developed by the Agency and bamboos were chipped during 2005 – 2006.
The experts of Paper Mills in India have come to a conclusion that the bamboo chips prepared by Bamboo Development Agency were better in almost all aspects yielding better paper products compared to the conventional/existing process of chipping in use at the Paper Mill.
The Government of Mizoram/Bamboo Development Agency therefore launched a project of setting up of clusters/ centres of bamboo chip and strip production units at various strategic locations with an estimated investment of       Rs. 70.00 lakhs/each. Each cluster is designed to produce 50 – 100 MT of bamboo chips daily. Under BAFFACOS  7 (seven) clusters have been set up and trial run of the respective units are in progress. The bamboo chips are intended to be supplied to Cachar Paper Mill, Panchgram.
